What is Tallow Salt Soap

Traditional Soap Made For Modern Cleaning

Healing Season Tallow Salt Soap Powder is handmade in Tasmania using a traditional soap-making process inspired by generations of household cleaning.

Unlike ordinary soap bars, our Tallow Salt Soap Powder undergoes additional processing to create a concentrated soap specifically suited to household cleaning applications.

Made from tallow, water, salt and sodium hydroxide, the finished soap is carefully dried and milled into a fine powder ready for use in cleaning products and household applications.

What Makes Our Tallow Salt Soap Different?

Most soap is made and left as a finished bar.

Our Tallow Salt Soap Powder goes through additional steps that have been used by soap makers for generations.

After the soap is made:

  • Salt is added during production.
  • The soap is separated from the glycerine-rich liquid.
  • The soap is reprocessed and dried.
  • The finished soap is milled into a powder.

This creates a concentrated cleaning soap with reduced glycerine content and excellent storage stability.

Why Do We Add Salt?

Salt has long been used in traditional soap making.

When salt is added to soap, it helps separate the soap from the glycerine-rich liquid produced during the soap-making process.

This process is often called "salting out."

The result is a firmer, more concentrated soap that is particularly well suited to cleaning applications.

Why Is The Glycerine Removed?

Glycerine is a natural by-product of soap making and is highly valued in skincare products because it attracts moisture.

For cleaning products, however, removing much of the glycerine can offer several benefits.

It helps create a soap that is:

  • Harder
  • More stable in storage
  • Easier to dry
  • Easier to grind into powder
  • Better suited to household cleaning products

The removed glycerine is not wasted in traditional soap making and has historically been used in a variety of other applications.

How Is It Made?

Our process includes:

  1. Making traditional tallow soap.
  2. Adding salt to separate the soap.
  3. Reboiling the soap.
  4. Removing the glycerine-rich liquid.
  5. Drying the soap.
  6. Milling the soap into a powder.

Every batch is handmade in Tasmania.
