Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is Healing Season?
Healing Season began during a time of overwhelm, when I realised my body and mind needed something simpler, rest, care, and less of what wasn’t serving us.
That led me to remove harsh chemicals from our home and start making our own products, beginning with traditional tallow skincare.
Today, Healing Season creates small-batch soaps and balms in Tasmania using grass-fed beef tallow and simple, time-tested methods. It’s about slowing down, choosing better, and returning to what works.
Where are your products made?
All products are handmade in small batches in Tasmania, Australia.
Are your products natural?
Yes. We use simple, traditional ingredients like tallow and natural oils, without unnecessary additives or synthetic fillers.
Tallow & Skincare
What is beef tallow?
Beef tallow is a traditional fat made by slowly rendering beef fat into a clean, stable ingredient used for skincare, soap, and cooking.

Why is tallow good for your skin?
Tallow closely matches your skin’s natural oils, helping it absorb easily and support moisture without synthetic ingredients.

Does tallow clog pores?
For most people, no. Properly rendered tallow tends to absorb well rather than block pores. If your skin is sensitive, start with a small amount.
Does tallow smell like beef?
No. Well-rendered tallow has a very mild, clean scent. Similar to Butter and Olive oil have a mild clean scent as well.
Is tallow too heavy for skin?
Tallow is rich, but you only need a small amount. Used lightly, it absorbs well without feeling greasy.
Can tallow be used on sensitive skin?
Yes. Tallow is often well suited to sensitive skin due to its simplicity. Starting with unscented products is usually best.
Superfat Education
What is superfat in soap and shampoo bars?
Superfat refers to the small amount of oils left after soap is made to reduce harshness.
What superfat level is best for hair?
A balanced level is best.
Too low → drying
Too high → buildup
What do different superfat levels do?
Lower (3–4%)
- Lighter feel
- More cleansing
- Good for oily/fine hair
Balanced (4–5%)
- Cleans without stripping
- Soft but not heavy
- Good for most hair types
Higher (6%+)
- More conditioning
- Better for dry hair
- More buildup risk
Why does superfat matter in tallow shampoo?
Tallow is naturally rich, so getting the balance right helps avoid hair feeling stripped or coated.
