A dog's shampoo doesn't need to come in a plastic bottle filled with a long list of ingredients.

At Healing Season, our Tallow Dog Shampoo is handmade in Tasmania using beef tallow, carefully selected oils, colloidal oats and a blend of tea tree, rosemary and lemongrass essential oils.

We've formulated our dog shampoo at a 7% superfat, creating a traditional soap bar designed to cleanse without being as stripping as a low- or zero-superfat cleaning soap.

And because it's a solid bar, there's no shampoo bottle to squeeze, spill or chase around the bath while your dog is simultaneously attempting an escape.

Below you'll find answers to the questions we commonly receive about our Tallow Dog Shampoo, including how to use it, what's in it, how often to wash your dog and how to look after your bar.

What Is Tallow Dog Shampoo?

Healing Season Tallow Dog Shampoo is a solid shampoo bar made specifically with dog washing in mind.

Rather than using a liquid shampoo base, we make ours using the traditional soap-making process of saponification.

Our formulation includes:

  • Beef tallow

  • Coconut oil

  • Olive oil

  • Castor oil

  • Colloidal oats

  • Tea tree essential oil

  • Rosemary essential oil

  • Lemongrass essential oil

  • Water

  • Sodium hydroxide used during saponification

The result is a firm, practical bar that creates a creamy lather and can be used directly on a wet coat or lathered between your hands first.

Why Do You Use Tallow in Dog Shampoo?

Beef tallow makes an excellent foundation for traditional soap.

It contributes to a firm, durable bar and helps create the creamy lather we want from a dog shampoo bar.

For us, it also fits naturally with the way we make products at Healing Season: taking a traditional, useful ingredient and turning it into something practical for everyday life.

What Does 7% Superfat Mean?

Our Tallow Dog Shampoo is formulated with a 7% superfat.

During traditional soap making, fats and oils react with sodium hydroxide in a process called saponification.

Superfatting means the recipe is formulated so that some fats and oils remain unsaponified in the finished bar.

Why does that matter?

A very low or zero-superfat soap is useful when strong cleaning and grease removal are the goal - our dish soap is a good example.

That's not what we want when washing a dog's coat.

The higher superfat in our dog shampoo creates a milder, less-stripping bar suited to washing skin and coat rather than dishes and household grime.

Why Does the Shampoo Contain Colloidal Oats?

Colloidal oats are very finely ground oats that disperse throughout the soap rather than sitting in it as large pieces.

We chose them as part of the gentle, simple formulation of our dog shampoo.

They also complement the creamy character of a tallow-based bar without adding unnecessary fragrance or complicated ingredients.

Why Do You Use Tea Tree, Rosemary and Lemongrass?

We selected tea tree, rosemary and lemongrass essential oils to create the fresh, clean botanical character of our dog shampoo.

The combination gives the bar a distinctly fresh herbal and citrus scent without using synthetic fragrance oil.

Essential oils are concentrated ingredients, however, and "natural" doesn't automatically mean that more is better. They need to be used thoughtfully in products intended for animals.

That's why our dog shampoo is a formulated product rather than simply tallow soap with a large amount of essential oil added to it.

Does the Dog Shampoo Kill Fleas?

No. We don't sell or describe our Tallow Dog Shampoo as a flea treatment.

You may see claims online about particular essential oils killing, preventing or treating fleas, but our shampoo hasn't been tested or registered as a veterinary flea treatment.

If your dog has fleas, use an appropriate flea-control product or seek advice from your veterinarian.

Our shampoo's job is much simpler:

It's there to wash the dog.

Sometimes simple really is enough.

Is Tea Tree Essential Oil Safe for Dogs?

Tea tree essential oil is highly concentrated and can be harmful to dogs if used incorrectly or ingested, particularly in concentrated form.

That doesn't mean that a formulated wash-off product containing an appropriately selected amount of an ingredient is equivalent to applying undiluted essential oil directly to an animal.

Never apply our essential-oil blend or undiluted tea tree oil directly to your dog.

Use the shampoo only as directed, rinse thoroughly and don't allow your dog to eat or chew the bar.

If your dog has known sensitivities, a skin condition or you're unsure whether a product is appropriate, speak with your veterinarian before use.

How Do I Use a Tallow Dog Shampoo Bar?

Start by thoroughly wetting your dog's coat.

Wet the shampoo bar and either:

Rub the bar gently over the wet coat, then massage the lather through with your hands,

or

Create a lather between your hands first and massage that through the coat.

Work the lather gently through the fur.

Avoid the eyes, nose, mouth and inside of the ears.

Then rinse very thoroughly with clean water.

Towel dry your dog as usual.

How Much Shampoo Do I Need?

Less than you might expect.

Because you're working with a solid bar rather than pouring liquid shampoo into your hand, you can build the amount of lather you need as you go.

A small dog with a short coat will naturally require less than a large dog with a thick or long coat.

There's no need to create mountains of foam.

You simply need enough lather to work through the coat effectively.

How Often Should I Wash My Dog?

There isn't one washing schedule that's right for every dog.

How often a dog needs bathing depends on factors including:

  • Coat type

  • Lifestyle

  • How much time they spend outdoors

  • How dirty they get

  • Individual skin and coat needs

  • Veterinary advice

A farm dog who has discovered a particularly magnificent patch of mud may have rather different bathing requirements from an indoor dog who spends most of the week occupying the best chair in the house.

Wash when needed rather than assuming every dog requires the same schedule.

Can I Use the Dog Shampoo on My Dog's Face?

Be particularly careful around the face.

Don't allow shampoo or lather to enter your dog's eyes, nose, mouth or inside the ears.

For the face, using a damp cloth and carefully controlling where the product goes is generally much easier than rubbing the bar directly over the area.

What If Shampoo Gets in My Dog's Eyes?

Rinse the area immediately with plenty of clean water.

If irritation persists or you're concerned about your dog, contact your veterinarian.

Can Puppies Use the Tallow Dog Shampoo?

Puppies can be more sensitive than adult dogs, and their needs vary with age and breed.

Rather than giving one blanket recommendation for every puppy, we recommend checking with your veterinarian before introducing a new shampoo to a very young dog.

Is the Dog Shampoo Suitable for Dogs With Sensitive Skin?

Every dog's skin is different.

While we've deliberately formulated our shampoo with a 7% superfat and selected ingredients, that doesn't mean any product can be guaranteed suitable for every dog.

Dogs can react to ingredients just as people can.

If your dog has particularly sensitive skin, allergies, an existing skin condition, broken skin or a history of reactions to grooming products, seek veterinary advice before trying something new.

Stop using the shampoo if irritation occurs.

Is This a Medicated Dog Shampoo?

No.

Healing Season Tallow Dog Shampoo is a cleansing product, not a veterinary medicine.

It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent skin conditions, parasites or disease.

If your dog has itching, persistent odour, hair loss, sores, redness, recurring skin problems or other symptoms, don't simply keep changing shampoos.

That's a job for your veterinarian.

How Do I Store My Dog Shampoo Bar?

The most important thing is to allow it to dry between uses.

Traditional soap will soften and disappear much faster if it sits permanently in water.

After washing:

  1. Rinse excess foam and loose hair from the bar.

  2. Allow excess water to drain away.

  3. Store it somewhere with good airflow.

  4. Let it dry thoroughly before its next use.

If you're using our Dog Shampoo on a Rope, hang it somewhere dry and well ventilated.

Looking after the bar properly helps it last considerably longer.

Can Humans Use the Dog Shampoo?

The ingredients used in our dog shampoo aren't mysterious "dog-only" ingredients, and the formulation eventually helped inspire another Healing Season product - our Tallow Bush Bar.

However, the dog shampoo was formulated and presented specifically for washing dogs.
