MADE FOR THE BUSH

We wanted to create a solid wash bar that genuinely earned its place in the camping bag.

When you're camping or travelling, separate bottles of shampoo, body wash, hand wash and beard wash take up space, can leak and — as we've discovered ourselves — there's often nowhere particularly useful to put them around camp once they're wet.

So we went back to something much simpler.

One solid bar that can do several jobs.

The Tallow Bush Bar is made using traditional soap-making methods with beef tallow, coconut oil, olive oil and castor oil, along with colloidal oats and genuine essential oils.

We've formulated it with a 7% superfat and paired it with a natural cotton hanging soap saver bag so your bar has somewhere practical to live around camp.

Wash with it.

Hang it.

Let it dry.

Use it again.

The Bush Bar is scented with genuine essential oils of tea tree, lemongrass and rosemary rather than synthetic fragrance oil.

Tea tree brings a distinctive fresh, earthy Australian character.

Lemongrass adds a bright, clean citrus note.

Rosemary rounds out the blend with its fresh herbal aroma.

Together they create a crisp, herbal and citrusy scent that feels beautifully at home outdoors.

WHAT'S IN YOUR BUSH BAR?

We like simple ingredient lists where every ingredient has a reason for being there.

Beef Tallow

Tallow forms the foundation of our Bush Bar.

Traditionally used in soap making for generations, it helps produce a firm, long-lasting bar with a creamy lather.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contributes cleansing ability and helps create the bubbly lather you'd expect from a good bar of soap.

Olive Oil

Olive oil forms part of our balanced blend of fats and oils and contributes to the overall character and feel of the finished bar.

Castor Oil

Castor oil helps support a rich, stable lather.

Colloidal Oats

Finely milled colloidal oats are incorporated throughout the Bush Bar.

Tea Tree, Lemongrass & Rosemary Essential Oils

This blend creates the Bush Bar's fresh, herbal and citrusy scent.

We don't add synthetic fragrance oil.

Water & Sodium Hydroxide

Water and sodium hydroxide are used to make traditional soap.

During a process called saponification, sodium hydroxide reacts with the fats and oils to form soap.

It is chemistry - the very old-fashioned kind.

WHAT DOES 7% SUPERFAT MEAN?

You'll notice 7% SUPERFAT on your Bush Bar label.

So what does it actually mean?

Traditional soap is created when sodium hydroxide reacts with fats and oils during saponification.

The Bush Bar is formulated with approximately 7% more fats and oils than are required for complete saponification.

This means a portion of the fats and oils remains unsaponified in the finished bar.

That's quite different from the way we formulate something such as a heavy-duty household cleaning soap, where strong cleansing is the priority.

For our multipurpose Bush Bar, intended for washing skin, hair, beard and hands, we deliberately chose the 7% superfat formulation.

HOW TO USE YOUR BUSH BAR

BODY

Wet your skin and the Bush Bar.

Work the bar between wet hands or directly against your skin to create a lather.

Wash as usual and rinse thoroughly.

Simple as that.

HANDS

Wet your hands and the Bush Bar.

Lather, wash and rinse.

This might be the least exciting thing your Bush Bar does - but around camp it could be one of the most useful.

BEARD

Wet your beard and the Bush Bar.

Create a small amount of lather and work it gently through your beard.

Massage through and rinse thoroughly.

No separate beard wash required.

USING YOUR BUSH BAR ON YOUR HAIR

Yes, the Bush Bar can wash your hair — and that's particularly handy when you're camping or travelling and want to carry as little as possible.

Thoroughly wet your hair.

Wet the Bush Bar and create a lather in your hands or gently apply it around the scalp.

Concentrate primarily on your scalp rather than repeatedly rubbing the bar through the lengths of your hair.

Massage gently with your fingertips and rinse very thoroughly.

Follow with conditioner if your hair needs it.

What about regular hair washing?

The Bush Bar is first and foremost a multipurpose traditional soap bar.

Its ability to wash your hair means you don't necessarily need to pack a separate shampoo for a weekend away or a short camping trip.

For regular or longer-term hair washing, however, you may prefer one of our Healing Season Shampoo Bars, which has been specifically formulated as a dedicated hair product.

Traditional soap and dedicated shampoo bars behave differently, and everyone's hair, scalp, routine and water conditions are different.

What works beautifully for one person's hair may not suit another.

We'd rather tell you that than pretend one bar is magically perfect for everybody.

WHY THE COTTON HANGING BAG?

This little bag solves one of those annoying camping problems we know very well.

Where do you put the wet soap?

When you're camping, caravanning or using an outdoor shower, there's often nowhere sensible to leave a wet bar.

That's why we've paired the Bush Bar with a natural cotton hanging soap saver bag.

Keep the Bush Bar inside the bag and use the drawstring to hang it somewhere with good airflow after washing.

The bag helps:

• Keep your Bush Bar contained

• Give you somewhere practical to put it after washing

• Allow water to drain and air to circulate

• Keep your bar handy around camp

• Collect smaller pieces as the bar gets used

• Prevent the soap from sitting in a puddle of water

And there's another benefit:

Traditional soap lasts much better when it's allowed to dry properly between uses.

After washing, let excess water drain and hang the bag somewhere with plenty of airflow.

TRAVELLING WITH YOUR BUSH BAR

Ideally, allow your Bush Bar to dry before packing it away.

Once dry, simply pack it with your camping gear or toiletries.

If you have to pack up while the bar is still damp, don't leave it sealed away wet for days.

Take it back out and hang it somewhere with airflow when you reach your next destination.

Your Bush Bar wants to travel.

It just doesn't want to travel in its own private swamp.

WHAT ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?

This matters particularly because we've made the Bush Bar for people who spend time outdoors.

Traditional soap is primarily made up of fatty-acid salts created during saponification.

Scientific testing of fatty-acid soaps has shown that these types of soaps can biodegrade under recognised biodegradability testing methods.

However, the complete Healing Season Tallow Bush Bar has not been independently tested or certified for biodegradability as a finished product.

For that reason, we don't make claims such as:

100% biodegradable
Ocean safe
River safe
Reef safe

just because they sound good on a label.

Instead, we'd rather tell you what we've actually made.

The Bush Bar is:

• A traditional fatty-acid soap

• Made primarily from tallow and plant oils

• Scented with genuine essential oils

• Made without synthetic fragrance oil

• A solid bar that doesn't require a liquid shampoo or body-wash bottle

• Multipurpose, allowing one bar to perform several washing jobs

• Paired with a reusable cotton soap saver bag

But there is one very important distinction.

BIODEGRADABLE DOESN'T MEAN "WASH IN THE RIVER"

Even soap made from biodegradable ingredients shouldn't be deliberately used directly in natural waterways.

Soap enters the environment before it has had time to biodegrade.

When camping in Tasmania, Parks & Wildlife recommends washing your body at least 50 metres away from water sources.

Take the water you need away from the river, creek or lake, wash there and allow wastewater to disperse appropriately, while always following the rules for the area you're visiting.

Enjoy the bush. Look after the bush.

That's far more important to us than putting a big green claim on the wrapper.

Healing Season Dish Soap

Need something for the non-human washing jobs?

Our solid Healing Season Dish Soap is formulated at 0% superfat for cleaning rather than washing skin and hair.

Pack a bar for washing camp dishes and, when needed, it can also be handy for spot cleaning or handwashing sturdy clothes, cloths and tea towels while travelling.

For fabrics, wet the item and soap, work a small amount into the soiled area and rinse thoroughly. Always spot-test first, particularly on delicate, specialty or colour-sensitive fabrics.

Can I use the Bush Bar on my body?

Yes. That's one of its main jobs.

Wet your skin and the bar, create a lather, wash and rinse thoroughly.

Can I use the Bush Bar as shampoo?

Yes.

The Bush Bar can be used to wash your hair, which makes it particularly convenient for camping and travelling when you want one product to perform several jobs.

Wet your hair thoroughly, concentrate the lather primarily around your scalp, massage gently and rinse very well.

Should I use the Bush Bar as my everyday shampoo?

The Bush Bar can wash hair, but it is a traditional multipurpose soap rather than a dedicated shampoo product.

For regular hair washing, you may prefer our Healing Season Shampoo Bar, which is specifically formulated for hair.

Individual experiences vary depending on hair type, scalp, routine and even the water you're washing in.

Do I need conditioner?

That depends on your hair.

If your hair feels as though it needs conditioning after using the Bush Bar, follow with conditioner.

For camping and travelling, our solid Healing Season Conditioner Bar gives you that option without adding another liquid bottle to your bag.

Can I wash my beard with it?

Yes.

Wet your beard, work a small amount of lather through it and rinse thoroughly.

What does 7% superfat mean?

The Bush Bar is formulated with approximately 7% more fats and oils than are required for complete saponification, leaving a portion unsaponified in the finished soap.

What does the Bush Bar smell like?

Fresh, herbal and citrusy.

Its scent comes from genuine tea tree, lemongrass and rosemary essential oils.

Does it contain synthetic fragrance?

No synthetic fragrance oil is added to the Bush Bar.

Is it fragrance free?

No.

Is it chemical free?

No — because nothing is.

Water is a chemical and soap itself is produced through a chemical reaction.

We prefer to tell you exactly what's in our products rather than use misleading terms such as "chemical free".

Is the Bush Bar biodegradable?

The fatty-acid salts that make up traditional soap are known to biodegrade.

However, the complete Healing Season Bush Bar has not been independently tested or certified as a finished biodegradable product, so we don't describe it as "100% biodegradable" or certified biodegradable.

Can I use it directly in a river, creek or lake?

Please don't.

Even biodegradable soap should be used away from natural waterways.

A FEW SENSIBLE PRECAUTIONS

If soap enters the eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Essential oils and naturally derived ingredients aren't automatically suitable for everyone. If you know you're sensitive to any of the ingredients, the Bush Bar may not be the right product for you.
