What Is BTMS-50?

If you've looked at the ingredients on a conditioner bar, you may have noticed BTMS-50 listed and wondered what it actually is.

Despite its technical name, BTMS-50 is one of the most popular conditioning ingredients used in modern hair care. It's valued because it helps leave hair feeling soft, smooth and easier to manage.

At Healing Season, we use BTMS-50 in our handmade conditioner bars to create a silky, easy-to-use product that glides through the hair while complementing the nourishing properties of tallow and natural oils.

What Does BTMS-50 Stand For?

BTMS stands for Behentrimonium Methosulfate.

The "50" refers to the concentration of the active conditioning ingredient within the product. BTMS-50 typically contains around 50% Behentrimonium Methosulfate, blended with fatty alcohols that improve texture and make it easier to work with in cosmetic formulations.

Despite the word "sulfate" appearing in its name, BTMS-50 is not the same as the sulfates commonly found in some shampoos, such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). They are completely different ingredients with different purposes.

What Is BTMS-50 Made From?

One of the most common questions people ask is whether BTMS-50 is natural.

BTMS-50 is considered a naturally derived ingredient, meaning it begins with naturally sourced raw materials before being processed into its final form.

The primary conditioning ingredient is derived from rapeseed (canola) oil, while the fatty alcohols used alongside it are typically sourced from vegetable oils such as coconut or palm.

These plant-derived ingredients undergo careful processing to create a stable conditioning ingredient suitable for use in hair care products.

Is BTMS-50 Natural?

BTMS-50 isn't considered a raw natural ingredient in the same way as tallow or jojoba oil.

Instead, it is generally described as naturally derived because it originates from renewable plant oils that have been refined and processed.

Many natural and artisan skincare brands choose BTMS-50 because it provides excellent conditioning performance while being plant-derived.

Why Is BTMS-50 Used in Conditioner Bars?

BTMS-50 performs several important roles.

It helps:

  • Condition the hair.
  • Improve softness.
  • Reduce tangles.
  • Make wet hair easier to comb.
  • Improve slip during application.
  • Leave hair feeling smooth after rinsing.

Without a conditioning ingredient like BTMS-50, a conditioner bar would not perform as effectively.

Is BTMS-50 Safe?

BTMS-50 has been used in hair care products around the world for many years.

When formulated correctly in rinse-off products such as conditioner bars, it is widely recognised within the cosmetic industry as a safe conditioning ingredient.

As with any cosmetic product, individuals with known sensitivities should always discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Why Do We Use BTMS-50 at Healing Season?

Our goal is to create conditioner bars that combine traditional ingredients with reliable modern hair care technology.

Tallow provides richness and nourishment, while golden jojoba oil and castor oil contribute conditioning qualities. BTMS-50 complements these ingredients by helping the conditioner spread easily through the hair and rinse out cleanly, leaving hair feeling soft and manageable.

Rather than relying on a single ingredient, we believe each ingredient has an important role in creating a balanced conditioner bar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BTMS-50 a sulfate?

No. Although the name contains the word "methosulfate", BTMS-50 is not the same as cleansing sulfates like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).

Is BTMS-50 vegan?

Yes. BTMS-50 is generally manufactured from plant-derived raw materials and is considered suitable for vegan formulations.

Is BTMS-50 biodegradable?

BTMS-50 is regarded as readily biodegradable under standard testing, which is one reason it is widely used in personal care products. Manufacturers' specifications may vary slightly.

Why not just use oils?

Natural oils such as tallow, jojoba and castor oil help nourish and soften the hair, but they don't provide the same conditioning performance as BTMS-50. Using them together creates a conditioner bar that is easier to apply and rinse while leaving the hair feeling smooth.
