What Is Tallow Skincare? A Simple Guide to Beef Tallow for Skin

Tallow skincare might seem like a new trend, but the ingredient itself is anything but new.
If you've recently come across tallow balm, beef tallow skincare or handmade tallow soap, you may be wondering what exactly everyone is talking about.
Put simply, tallow skincare uses carefully rendered animal fat, usually beef tallow, as an ingredient in products made for the skin.
Long before modern skincare shelves were filled with complicated formulations, rendered animal fats were practical household ingredients. Tallow was traditionally used for cooking, soap making, candles, salves and other everyday purposes.
At Healing Season, that traditional simplicity is a big part of why we work with tallow today.
So, what exactly is tallow skincare, how is beef tallow made, and what should you know before trying it?
What Exactly Is Beef Tallow?

Beef tallow is rendered beef fat.
Rendering is the process of gently heating fat so that the usable fat can be separated from water, tissue and other material. It is then filtered to produce clean tallow.
Once cooled, beef tallow is generally firm at room temperature but softens and melts readily with warmth.
Tallow can be used for cooking, traditional soap making and skincare, depending on how it has been sourced, rendered and prepared.
Importantly, a tub of rendered tallow isn't automatically a finished skincare product. The quality of the tallow and the complete formulation matter too.
What Does Tallow Skincare Mean?
"Tallow skincare" isn't one particular product.
It's a broad term for skincare products containing tallow as an ingredient.
These can include:

-
Tallow balms
-
Facial and body balms
-
Tallow moisturisers
-
Handmade tallow soaps
-
Lip products
-
Other oil-based skincare formulations
Different makers formulate their products differently, so two products labelled "tallow balm" can have quite different ingredient lists.
That's why we think it's worth turning the jar around and reading the ingredients rather than buying something simply because TALLOW is written in enormous letters on the front.
Why Is Tallow Used in Skincare?
Tallow is a rich fat containing fatty acids including oleic, palmitic and stearic acids.
In a balm, fats and oils act as emollient ingredients, helping the skin feel softer and creating an oily layer that can help reduce moisture loss.
Tallow is also useful from a formulation point of view. At room temperature it is naturally firm, while the warmth of your fingers allows a small amount to soften and spread across the skin.
That makes it particularly suited to simple, water-free balms.
However, research specifically examining beef tallow as a modern skincare ingredient remains limited.
We don't think that needs to be hidden behind extravagant claims.
Tallow doesn't need to be a miracle ingredient to be useful.
Why Has Tallow Skincare Become Popular Again?
Tallow skincare has certainly found a new audience online, but humans haven't suddenly invented rendered animal fat.
What's new is the attention surrounding it.
Many people are becoming interested in shorter ingredient lists, traditional methods and understanding how everyday products are made.
For some, tallow skincare appeals because of its simplicity. For others, it's the idea of returning to an ingredient previous generations would have recognised.
Social media has undoubtedly helped tallow skincare become popular again.
Unfortunately, that popularity has also produced some fairly extraordinary claims.
You'll find tallow described online as everything from an acne treatment to an anti-ageing miracle.
That's not how we approach it at Healing Season.
Research into tallow skincare is still limited, and we don't claim that tallow cures eczema, psoriasis, acne or other skin conditions.
Individual skin experiences also differ. What feels lovely on one person's skin may not suit another.
We would rather tell you what is actually in our products, how they're made and how to use them.
Is Tallow Skincare Just Beef Fat on Your Face?
Technically, tallow begins as beef fat - but there's considerably more to a well-made skincare product than scooping fat from the kitchen and putting it on your face.
Raw beef fat is rendered and filtered to produce tallow.
That tallow can then become an ingredient in a properly formulated skincare product.
At Healing Season, we render the tallow that forms the foundation of many of our products and combine it with carefully selected ingredients depending on what we're making.
Our Vanilla Bean Tallow Balm, for example, begins with beef tallow infused with real Australian vanilla beans before being combined with jojoba oil.
Our other balms have their own formulations and ingredient combinations.
What Is Tallow Balm?
Tallow balm is generally a water-free skincare product made primarily from tallow, sometimes combined with other oils or ingredients.
Because a traditional balm doesn't contain water to make up most of the product, a little goes a surprisingly long way.
You generally don't need to scoop out the same amount you would use with a body lotion.
Start with a tiny amount, warm it between your fingertips and apply a thin layer.
If you've ever applied tallow balm and ended up shiny enough to signal passing aircraft, you've probably just used too much.
Our How to Use Tallow Balm Without Feeling Greasy guide explains exactly how to use a tallow balm and how little you actually need.
Is Tallow Soap the Same as Tallow Balm?

No.
Although both can begin with beef tallow, they're completely different products.
A tallow balm is a leave-on product containing fats and oils.
Tallow soap is created through a process called saponification, where fats and oils react with sodium hydroxide to create soap.
The finished bar isn't simply hardened beef fat.
Tallow has been used in traditional soap making for generations and contributes to a firm, long-lasting bar.

Does Tallow Skincare Contain Vitamins?
This deserves its own section because you'll see some very confident claims online.
Tallow is often promoted as being "packed with vitamins A, D, E and K".
Tallow may contain naturally occurring fat-soluble compounds, but amounts vary according to factors such as the source of the fat and processing.
More importantly, the presence of a particular nutrient in an ingredient doesn't automatically establish a meaningful skincare benefit when applied to the skin.
That's why we don't market tallow as a vitamin treatment.
It's also important not to confuse naturally occurring vitamin A compounds with retinol, which is a specific and extensively studied skincare ingredient.
Tallow isn't retinol.
Is Natural Tallow Skincare Automatically Better?
No.
"Natural" is a useful description of where an ingredient comes from, but it isn't a guarantee that something will suit everybody.
Natural ingredients can still cause irritation or allergic reactions.
That applies to essential oils, botanical ingredients, plant oils and animal-derived ingredients.
We think ingredient transparency is more useful than simply putting "natural" on the label.
Check the complete ingredient list, particularly if you know you're sensitive to particular ingredients.
Does Tallow Skincare Suit Everyone?
No skincare product suits everybody.
Some people enjoy the richness and simplicity of a tallow balm, while others prefer lighter water-based moisturisers.
If you're trying a new tallow skincare product:

-
Check the complete ingredient list
-
Patch test first
-
Begin with a very small amount
-
Introduce one new product at a time
-
Discontinue use if irritation develops
If you have a diagnosed skin condition or persistent skin concerns, appropriate healthcare advice is more useful than relying on skincare claims made online.
What Should You Look for When Buying Tallow Skincare?
Tallow skincare products can vary enormously, so look beyond the word "tallow".
Read the Complete Ingredients
What is combined with the tallow?
A short ingredient list can be useful if you prefer simple products, but fewer ingredients don't automatically make a product better or more suitable for your skin.
Check How It's Scented
Is the product unscented, infused with botanical ingredients, made with essential oils or scented using fragrance oils?
Look at the Maker
Does the business clearly explain what it uses and how its products are made?
Be Wary of Extraordinary Promises
If one jar apparently moisturises your skin, reverses ageing, treats acne, cures eczema and solves three other problems before breakfast, some scepticism is probably warranted.
Good skincare doesn't need a fairy tale attached to it.
How Healing Season Makes Tallow Skincare
At Healing Season, our tallow skincare products are made in small batches in Tasmania.
Our approach is deliberately simple:
Traditional methods. Straightforward ingredients. Practical products. Honest information.
Depending on the product, we combine carefully rendered beef tallow with selected oils, botanical infusions or essential oils.
We also make traditional tallow soaps, shampoo bars and other simple products using methods and ingredients that make sense for what we're trying to create.
Different products have different formulations because they're intended to do different jobs.
We don't believe a product needs twenty ingredients simply to make the label look impressive.
Where to Start With Tallow Skincare
If you're completely new to tallow skincare, don't feel as though you need to replace everything in your bathroom.
Start with one product.
A simple tallow balm is an easy introduction if you're interested in trying tallow as a leave-on skincare product.
A traditional tallow soap is another option if you're more interested in incorporating tallow into your everyday washing routine.
Give yourself time to see how your own skin responds before adding anything else.
