What is Tallow Soap?

Tallow soap is made when rendered beef tallow is combined with sodium hydroxide and water through a process called saponification.

During saponification, the fats and sodium hydroxide react to form soap and naturally occurring glycerine. Once the soap has completed this process and cured properly, the finished bar is no longer simply a mixture of tallow and lye, it has become soap.

Tallow has been used in traditional soapmaking for generations because it produces a firm bar with a creamy, stable lather and good durability.

Why is Tallow Used in Soapmaking?

Long before liquid body washes filled bathroom shelves, animal fats such as tallow were commonly used to make everyday household soap. There are practical reasons traditional soapmakers valued it, and still do.

In a soap recipe, tallow contributes hardness and structure, helping create a firm bar that holds its shape and can last well when allowed to dry between uses. It also produces a creamy, stable lather rather than relying on large, bubbly foam alone.

At Healing Season, tallow forms the foundation of our soap recipes, while other carefully chosen oils and ingredients are used to influence characteristics such as lather, scent, colour and texture.

For us, using tallow isn't about claiming that an old-fashioned ingredient is automatically better simply because it's traditional. It is a proven soapmaking fat that does its job remarkably well, which is why it has been used for generations.

How we Make Tallow Soap in Tasmania

Every Healing Season tallow soap begins with beef tallow that we carefully render and prepare here in Tasmania.

We make our soaps in small batches using the traditional cold-process method. The rendered tallow is combined with the other oils in the recipe and a measured sodium hydroxide solution, beginning the process of saponification.

Depending on the bar, we may also add ingredients such as clays, botanicals, coffee, honey, oats or essential oils to create different colours, scents and textures.

Once poured into moulds, the soap is left to set before being cut into individual bars. The bars are then given time to cure before they are labelled and ready to leave Healing Season.

It's a slower process than simply filling a bottle, but that's part of traditional soapmaking.

Does Tallow Soap Contain Lye?

Lye is essential for making traditional soap. Tallow and other fats cannot become soap without an alkali such as sodium hydroxide.

When we make tallow soap, carefully measured sodium hydroxide is combined with the fats and oils in the recipe. This begins a chemical reaction called saponification, which transforms the ingredients into soap and naturally occurring glycerine.

This is why saying that handmade soap is “made without lye” can be misleading. If it is true soap, lye was involved in making it, even though a properly formulated and fully saponified finished bar is very different from the ingredients that went into the soap pot.

At Healing Season, our recipes are carefully formulated and our bars are given time to cure before they are ready for use.

Tallow Soap vs Commercial Cleansers

Traditional tallow soap and modern body washes can both clean effectively, but they are made quite differently.

Tallow soap is created through saponification, where fats and oils react with sodium hydroxide to form soap and naturally occurring glycerine. Many liquid body washes and cleansing bars instead use specially formulated surfactants to do the cleansing.

Neither approach is automatically “good” or “bad”. Modern cleansers can be formulated to be very mild, while traditional soap has the advantages of being a simple, solid product that requires no bottle and can last well when kept dry between uses.

How to Make Your Tallow Soap Last Longer

Handmade soap lasts best when it has a chance to dry properly between uses.

After washing, keep your tallow soap somewhere that allows water to drain away and air to circulate around the bar. Leaving it sitting in water or on a wet surface can soften the soap and make it disappear much faster than it needs to.

A well-draining soap dish works beautifully at home. For the shower, travelling or camping, a hanging cotton soap saver bag is another simple option, pop the soap inside and hang it up to dry between uses.

A little care between washes can help you get much more use from every bar.

Does Tallow Soap Smell Like Beef?

It’s one of the first questions people ask about tallow soap, and a perfectly reasonable one!

Properly rendered tallow should have very little odour, and a finished tallow soap shouldn’t smell like the beef fat it began with.
